Halloween traditions

Halloween is celebrated on 31st October. It was originally the Celtic festival of the dead, known as Samhain. The Christian church tried to suppress this pagan festival, renaming it All Hallows` Eve. However, the festival remains essentially pagan and has been banned in some Christian schools in Britain. Pumpkin lanterns (Jack o`lantern), masks and costumes are all part of Halloween, as is the custom of “trick or treat”. This involves children in costumes going from house to house asking for treats such as sweets, fruit and money. If the householder refuses to give them a treat the children may then play a trick or practical joke on them. Other Halloween traditions are:
